HAFURI is an archaic Japanese word meaning mortuary or celebration. At the heart of this work is an island on the border between Japan and the Korean peninsula. The philosophy of life and death inherent in the small village on this island, which is also akin to the world of mythology, has kept deeply shaking my heart. This feeling is derived from the intense fear and affirmation of death that I felt as a child, and from the respect and prayers for gods and ancestors from other places that lurk in the daily routines and annual events of Japanese life, even if they change form.
