the project spans two periods 1993-8 and 2022-4 evoking Armenia's tortuous journey towards a viable independence. The eminent painter Matiros Sarian described his intention to depict "the visible survival of our small country" following the slaughter of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire. He wrote that "this piece of land on the slopes of Mount Aragats I look upon as our source of hope" He wanted to show the world that mountainous Armenia survivess because of the dedication of its people who work the land in a region that has always been a geopolitical nightmare. I photograph in his footsteps.
