I-Chan Park Through a solitary figure ascending the stairs of an underground passage and a flock of pigeons suddenly taking flight, this photograph captures movement and a sense of liberation arising within an enclosed space. Positioned at the center of the frame with their back turned, the figure moves upward, while the body, rendered as a dark silhouette, conceals any specific identity or expression. This anonymity transforms the figure into an urban pedestrian who might be encountered in any city, and the act of climbing the stairs may be read as an inward passage from darkness toward light.
This photograph was made in 2010, at the Bolhao Market, in Porto, Portugal. A soulful place before the maintenance works made, last year.
