Fresh lava spread in branching channels during the opening phase of an eruption at Sundhnúkagígar in the Svartsengi volcanic system on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula. At peak onset, the eruption discharged lava at an estimated rate of about 1,500 cubic meters per second, feeding the glowing rivers of molten rock visible in the foreground.
