During the first ten hours after giving birth, my baby and I were alone in the hospital room. Every photograph in this series was taken by me alone. I photographed the umbilical cord, peeling skin, fine hair, tiny scratches, wrinkled limbs, and an unfocused expression—fleeting traces of a newborn adapting to life in this new world. I felt compelled to preserve what would otherwise disappear unnoticed. This is neither birth photography nor traditional newborn photography. This is Mother's Gaze.
