Before a living animal becomes a piece of meat it must visit the slaughterhouse. In these “disassembly plants”, out of public sight, skilled workers accompany the animals to the last moments of their life, following cold, surgical procedures. The smell of death is in the air; the fear spreads amongst the animals waiting for their turn as they see the one before them disappearing behind the iron door of the trap. The shriek of terror and the desperate clanging of hooves are clear signs that even animals understand once through that door, no one gets out alive.
