Whoever lives in the south of Sicily can no longer enjoy the idyllic view of the sea without worrying. Too many refugees have lost their lives in crossing the "blue border", too often their bodies have been washed up on the beaches. The shadowy appearance of flotsam stings the heart of many a southerner, and the view of the sea creates a corresponding sense of melancholy. North and East-Europeans cannot imagine what they are doing to their southern neighbours with their Schengen border policy. These blue borders are developing into a symbol of contempt for human beings in dealing with refugees

Story

Blue borders, similar to green borders on land, are the political borders along lakes, rivers and seas between two states.
Whoever lives in the south of Sicily can no longer enjoy the idyllic view of the sea without worrying. Too many refugees have lost their lives in crossing the blue border, too often their bodies have been washed up on the beaches. The shadowy emergence of flotsam stings the heart of many a southerner, the view of the sea generates a corresponding melancholy.
North and East Europeans cannot imagine what they are doing to their southern neighbours with their Schengen border policy. While Europe's green borders are being controlled more and more closely, the blue borders in the Mediterranean are becoming a symbol of contempt for human beings in dealing with refugees who dare to embark on the dangerous journey across the sea.
