Ngatahi Now iso restrictions are over, some people say it feels the same as before lockdown. We return to busy-ness. Consumerism. Turn a blind eye to social disparities, unseen divisions and casual, unconscious bias. Humanity seems a faster spreading problem than the virus on our doorsteps. But we can take opportunities to sow seeds that inspire. To avoid our old normal. To consider the world we want to live in and leave our children. It's time to shape a new normal where open-minded, meaningful interactions, showing kindness and compassion to all is the only normal.

Story

For most of us, our idea of what and who is truly important shifted during lockdown in Aotearoa, New Zealand. This series is about remembering where we were, where we've been and not losing sight of where we want to go.

Almost everything about lockdown seemed polarising. Our situations, experiences and opinions differed hugely.

A brief stint of a slower-paced life highlighted environmental and social responsibilities. During the lockdown, we all wondered what a new normal would look like.

And still, some people have come out of lockdown, surprised to find things feel no different to how they had pre-lockdown.

In some homes, the lockdown was appreciated and felt comfortable. It was a welcome chance to wind down. Spend time with loved ones. Catch your breath, rekindle old or find new past times. Some of us didn't want lockdown to end.

For others, it brought broader health issues, significant fear and adversity. The feeling of distance between friends and whanau intensified. Not all of us could access the help and essentials we needed.

These differences in experiences are so huge for some communities that the only thing we seem united in is the message to wash our hands.

So coming out of lockdown to what feels like the old normal, is a sign we should work together to shape our new normal.

We can take opportunities to sow seeds that inspire. To consider the world we want to live in and leave our children.
