A photographic series inspired by loss and what gives us strength to move on - inner strength nurtured by exterior help. Each character was imagined as someone who has lost a dear one. This series was inspired by the news of Alexandra, a kidnapped teenager, and how everyone I know reacted to it. How we all felt rage, sorrow and had to accept the reality of what was happening. And how we had to find comfort, knowing we are not alone. I wanted the images to be as raw as possible. Each image was shot underwater, and has very little editing, benefiting from the natural effects of sun and water.
A photographic series inspired by loss and that which gives us strength to move on. Each character was imagined as someone who has lost a dear one, in a terrible and unexpected way. The central piece of this series is the one where three women pictured comforting each other seemingly blend, nameless, timeless, faceless, united by grief and their humanity. They are wearing black as a sign of mourning but also as a unifying symbol of their frailty. And while their own personal tragedy unfolds, soundless, the world around them continues existing in its usual state of defiant beauty, shouting its vibrant colors over the women’s silence.
This series was inspired by the news of Alexandra, a kidnapped teenager, and how everyone I know reacted to it. How we all felt rage, sorrow and had to accept the reality of what was happening. And how we had to find comfort, knowing we are not alone. I wanted the images to be as raw as possible, with spontaneous reactions and movements from my characters. So each image was shot underwater, and has very little editing, benefiting from the natural effects of sun and water.
Water has the effect of carrying you to places you don't want to be in. Things around you move, as well, whether you want them to or not. Because we are bound by the same frailties, maybe the best you can do is hang on, care for the people around you, and be there for them as much as possible, even if not in person, and just through a promised embrace.
