This project deals with the relationship between the subject and the environment, emphasizing the process of “fitting in.” Why try to adapt? The value of adapting is explored through the tension between a subject wearing an animal mask and a architectural context with strong geometric features. The masks stand in stark contrast to the absence of nature in the built environment, which here takes on a presence that rivals that of the subject. Yet the subject inevitably affects one’s perception of the surrounding environment, which becomes in part phantasmagorical, contributing to a general sense of absurdity and alienation.

Why try to adapt?

The value of adapting is explored through the tension between a subject wearing an animal mask and a architectural context with strong geometric features. To what degree does the subject fit into this context? To what extent has the subject attempted to do so? What is the value in adapting? The concept of adaptation is emphasized by the presence of a mask, which is used to alter the relationship with the context. In this case, the animal masks stand in stark contrast to the contemporary built environment.

Adaptation also considers how the subject influences the environment and ones perception of it. In these photographs the built environment takes on a presence that rivals that of the subject – a sensation which is strengthened through an emphasis on composition and geometry. Yet the subject inevitably affects the perception of the surrounding environment, which, in this case, becomes in part phantasmagorical, contributing to a general sense of absurdity and alienation.

My photography is to large degree characterized by a fascination with geometry and mystery. In this project I sought to couple this enthrallment with a theme that came naturally to me, having lived in several countries.
