At the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic NYC public hospitals were hit hard. Emergency rooms were overwhelmed. All available spaces were converted into Intensive Care Units overnight. Over 27,000 people have died. When I arrived to document the response many of the doctors and nurses had worked 12-16 hour shifts- some for over 30 days straight- while they slept in their basements or garages to keep their families safe. Doctor "A" who was in the middle of a 11 hour shift said to me "I grew up 5 blocks from here. These are my neighbors. I am going to be here." Their efforts were heroic.

Neighborhoods across NYC responded by singing, banging pots, and cheering them on every night at 7pm.
