The photograph is a decisive condensation of various crises of the moment: anger over numerous incidents of police brutality against unarmed Black victims coinciding with frustration after months of quarantine, and just after the height of pandemic infections and deaths in New York City, visible in the rubber gloves and masks on some of the protestors. Beyond the symbolism of a muscular Black fist confronting institutional white power, as seen in the American flag protected behind the luxury Trump facade.
