The Colonial Building is one of the most important historic sites in Newfoundland. It witnessed the historical moment when Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949. My friend Robert Tilley, who was born one year before Newfoundland became part of Canada, was peaking behind one column in this photo. This great building with its soft light at night always reminds me of what Johann Joachim Winckelmann, a German art historian and archaeologist said, “edle Einfalt und stille Größe”, namely “noble simplicity and quiet grandeur”.
