This image of Portland opera singer Onry was made in the basement of Yale Union, a space where he practices and performs. Just a few weeks before going viral for an impromptu duet of the Star Spangle Banner, Onry was silenced by a security guard while singing in the streets downtown. “It does make me ask a few questions about how we see African American individuals in America. Even if they’re singing the highest form of art... how do we view them if they’re not where they’re supposed to be? Like a concert hall, or Broadway?”
