These images present a selection from a 40 image series of portraits created in Jacmel Haiti to help raise awareness to the ongoing plight of the Haitian people. "The Pink Door Photographs" presents a glimpse of the rich fabric which is the Haitian community, one that refuses to be defined by endless statistics, mountains of rubble and impossible conditions.

Story

While not everyone survived this immense tragedy, those that have are trying to sort out their lives by asking
questions on which way to turn, how to move forward, where to find work and what to do with themselves
as they deal with the enormous pain of having lost loved ones underneath the debris. Still, more pressing
questions remain. Where will I sleep tonight? Where can I find something to eat? Is my family safe tonight
while they sleep and how do I take care of my babies when I have nothing left to give.
As the tragedy in Haiti left the news cycle to be replaced by the Grammys on one end to the next major
catastrophe in Chile on the other, I believe it's fitting for mature photographers to play their role in a responsible,
ethical and moral capacity. The goal being to keep global issues that surround Haiti’s people in front of those
seeking ways to equally play their role to assist a nation in getting back on its feet. I was invited to Haiti by well-respected organizations who challenged me to create
images that supported the message of “HOPE.” For the most, part news teams had left and the rare
opportunity to conceptualize a series of iconic images laid in front of me. I wanted to create a series of photographs which hadn’t been attempted before, at least not in a relief
setting, which would show the vitality and spirit which is the Haitian people, if only for a brief moment.
To that end, I believe we were successful in creating something fresh, something new – a leading style of
portraiture to capture the imagination and inspire people to play their part. As a nation and as individuals they are proud and refuse to be defined by images of dead bodies, massive amounts of rubble or statistics so I felt that...there was room to create images full of dignity. They came to my set voluntarily and gave me us the gift of their image in what are vulnerable times for the Haitian people.
