Jean Carroll has had a lifetime's love affair with hats. Jean was apprenticed at 14 years of age where she began making hats during the 2nd World War and is amazingly still working long 12 hour days full time at 83 years of age. In 2005 Jean received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to the theatrical arts as a designer of millinery and has designed fashion and theoretical hats for some of the most influential playwrights and talented actors of this century including working on shows such as Dr Zhivago, Lion King, Show Girls to name a few. Jean still wears a hat everyday and is just one of the most elegant and lovely inspirations I have has the pleasure to photograph. She was aptly nicknamed “Fairy Fingers” because of the delicate work she does on her amazing hats. Jeans workshop is a room of her history.
