The Justus van Effencomplex was a social housing project designed by the architect Michiel Brinkman and built in 1922. Located in Spangen, Rotterdam, it was considered to be a revolutionary idea for its time. It has National Monument status.A main feature of the architecture was a broad walkway stretching the entire first level. This allowed the tenants to socialize with their neighbours and easily view the other areas within the complex. Brinkman's concept of open vistas was influenced by cinema, which was in its early development in the first part of the twentieth century. Over the last ten years the Justus fell into disrepair. A plan was developed to restore this national monument and reshape it into a modern apartment estate. The residents were relocated over a number of years and by 2008 the 260 apartments were all but vacant. The image is two photos side by side with an imperfect join in the middle that signifies our ever changing world and the fracture between the original socialistic identity of the complex and the plan to redevelop it into a luxury housing estate.
