On 17th February a peaceful commemoration of the martyrs killed in Benghazi during the 2006 attack on the Italian Consulate is forcefully repressed by the Libyan regime, alarmed by the promoters of liberty and democracy. In the following days disturbances break out all over the country and soon the armed revolt turns into a civil war.The rebel army is composed mostly of civilians and university students is not prepared to confront Gaddafi’s loyalists and the population demandsUNOintervention. It is the Western bombings that save Benghazi from siege and the heavy combat which is still taking place in Misrata and other Libyan cities.
