These portraits were all made during a Greyhound bus voyage on two week journeys in 2011. Individuals were asked permission to be subjects in the work. The people represent the class most challenged in the current economic struggle. This body of work will continue in July 2012 and cover the East Coast and the Great Lakes States.

Story

America from the Bus

These portraits were made while traveling around the United States by several buses. Journeying on a bus demands a much longer time spent in pursuit of one’s destination. Buses make frequent stops for short breaks, but are almost perpetually in motion. This intense travel time requires passengers endure extended periods moving without ordinary lodging and rest facilities. Those traveling in this manner become comrades and wear the effects of the expedition on their faces and clothes.

Each one of these portraits is a fellow bus mate I met while voyaging around the country. I chose to photograph individuals who embodied the characteristics of bus travel. Often fatigued and eager for arrival to their destinations, these subjects are remarkable examples of resilience and acceptance of a process to which one must submit in order for success.

The diverse culture of bus travel represents a growing portion of the population unable to travel in more luxurious circumstances. However, the overarching experience on the bus is positive. The persistence and perseverance of these people reflect the reality of life in the current economic climate. This project is ongoing and will continue on the Canada-United States border as well as the East Coast in the summer of 2012.
