I traveled to Dakar, Senegal for 10 days to document the challenges and resilience of children in this city of two million. It is estimated that 50,000 children, ages 5-15, every day are forced to take to the streets and beg. Many must children work instead of attend school, or work as well as attend school.
I traveled to Dakar, Senegal for 10 days in November of 2013 to document the challenges and resilience of children in this city of two million.
It is estimated that 50,000 children, ages 5-15, every day are forced to take to the streets and beg. Many children must work instead of attend school, or work as well as attend school. 50% of the population of Dakar lives in poverty, less than half are literate, just 53% of children attend school.
I was able to visit centers where non-profits are working to serve both street youth as well as empower those enrolled in community schools and public schools.
The shots span children working as well as begging in the streets, and in schools as well as a shelter for homeless children.
