The Central African Republic conflict started in December 2012 between the Government of the Central African Republic and Séléka, a coalition of rebel groups. The rebels accused the government and president of failing to abide by peace agreements signed in 2007 and 2011. Since 2013, militias--called antibalaka or antimachete--have been hunting down the mainly Muslim rebels who toppled the government and then went on a violent rampage for much of the year. The Séléka rebels mainly targeted Christians and continued their pillaging and killing even after their leader, Michel Djotodia, dissolved the group in September.
